a start-up with the mission to remove CO2 out of the ocean, in a safe, cost-effective and large-scale manner.
Why removing CO2
out of the sea?
The marine ecosystem is most vulnerable for excess CO2 emissions, both because of global warming and because of ocean acidification.
Because our oceans are suffering tremendously from CO2 emissions. Not only is the water heating up because of global warming, the CO2 dumped in the air is also seeping into the sea, making the water more acidic and causing great harm to marine life, from coral reef and shellfish throughout the entire food chain. Removing CO2 from the sea directly will alleviate the burden on this fragile ecosystem, while also fighting climate change.
removing CO2 from the sea has local and marketable advantages
How will
out of the blue do this?
We are developing a novel process to remove CO2 from liquid water, to subsequently store underground.
We just submitted a patent on a novel technological concept for CO2 removal from the ocean. Now, we are working hard to further improve and scale up this process. It is not easy, and it is hard to sell, but it will be absolutely necessary in the near future.
Out of the blue also prides itself in developing a technology that is safe-by-design: from the get-go, we only use materials that are inherently safe, and we only focus on solutions that are net carbon negative. (this may sound logical, but it is currently far from the norm)

Who is Lennart Joos?
CO2 capture runs through my blood, and I want to use my academic and industrial experience to make it happen at large scale.
My name is Lennart and CO2 removal removal runs through my blood.
After spending a year as a Fulbright PhD scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where I proposed a new process for CO2 capture, and my post-doc at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where I investigated how to cut the cost of carbon capture, I worked as a project manager in industry, first on the development of automotive catalysts, and then on digitalization.
After a record-breaking hot summer, I could no longer refrain from working on CO2 removal, so I founded “out of the blue”. I want to use the unique combination of experiences to make it a successful entreprise.

Let’s catch CO2 together!
Removing CO2 from the sea is technically challenging and economically insane, yet it will soon be absolutely necessary in order to keep ocean acidification and climate change in check.
Before out of the blue can offer negative CO2 emissions, more development work still needs to be done. However, making a sound business case, a business case that works for Mother Earth as much as for the economy dominating her, is not straightforward.
Yet, there is an enormous potential and untapped opportunity. If we succeed, out of the blue will not be another start-up, as much as a new kind of industry. If in some way you are interested in investing in this unique (and admittedly somewhat crazy) endeavour, please reach out to me and let’s look at the possibilities. Together, let’s catch CO2… out of the blue!
“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”
